Andrew Denman: Painting Wildlife in Acrylic:

Join artist Andrew Denman for a brief but in depth overview of his unique art-making process. Denman discusses working with reference, creating a study, his very unusual impasto under-painting technique, transferring, blocking in, building up detail, glazing, and highlighting. Denman primarily paints wildlife in acrylic paints in a recognizable style combining hyper-realism with stylization and abstraction, but any acrylic painter (or artist in general, regardless of style, subject, or medium) will benefit from observing his thoughtful and carefully explained process.

A Conversation with Andrew Denman & Guy Combes:

Diablo Fine Art Gallery in Walnut Creek, CA, hosted this event, "A Conversation with Andrew Denman & Guy Combes" on July 31st, 2015. This conversation was the first of a series of outreach events designed by gallery proprietor Brian Fowler to more directly engage the art buying public with professional working artists he represents, and to give artists an outlet for discussing what they do. Kathleen Lawrence-Davis of Western Art & Architecture moderates this informal dialogue with two world-renowned wildlife artists, Andrew Denman and Guy Combes. Learn more about moderator Kathleen Lawrence-Davis by visiting her on LinkedIn.

Apologies for the quality of the audio. Our professional videographer did not show up at the last minute, so this video was captured by the gallery owner with a Handycam and without the aid of directional microphones. Unfortunately the Q&A session was cut off, but the dialogue between Kathleen, Guy, and Andrew is there in its entirety.

A Bat in the Bathroom: Convincing Artwork Illusion by Andrew Denman

Friend, collector, and fellow artist Michelle Friend hams it up for the camera, enacting how a house guest might react to the trompe le'oeil bat I painted in her bathroom. Yep, that's a two dimension painting on the wall, not a real bat, but in the context of the room, it looks pretty convincing. I've long been fascinated with the trompe le'oeil (French for "Fools the Eye") style, and this project was a wonderful opportunity to explore this approach in a real world context that heightens the desired effect of all trompe le'oeil painting: to surprise and delight the viewer.

The Art of Andrew Denman, Museum Documentary:

This short film is both an introduction to the artwork of Andrew Denman and a visual journey through his creative process. The film played on a loop at the Nature in Art Museum during "Old World, New World" Andrew Denman and Guy Combe's joint exhibition at the Nature in Art Museum in Gloucestershire, England, in the summer of 2012. A portion of the video focuses on the artist's time in Trinidad, which inspired a majority of the collection of paintings showcased during the Nature in Art exhibition. The final segment focuses on the art-making process, using Denman's first major installation piece, "Polychrome" as an example. This exciting assemblage of individual paintings hung on a massive wall mural deliberately inverts the viewer's expectations by presented well known songbirds painted realistically...but in the opposite color of their actual plumage.
